This Island Was Just Named the Most Peaceful Country in the World

Iceland has been named the most peaceful country in the world for the 15th consecutive time. The Global Peace Index announced it as the safest place on Earth, and few are surprised. The beautiful country is home to more than gorgeous landscapes.

The Most Peaceful Place on Earth

This is not the first time Iceland has been proclaimed the most peaceful country. It has been at the top since 2008. The rankings are announced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) and the GPI annually. The institutes take into consideration 23 indicators. Some include the level of safety and security in society as well as ongoing domestic and international conflict, among other things.

The good news is that 126 countries had become more peaceful between 2009 and 2020, but the bad news is that 2023 showed that for the ninth year in a row, the level of peacefulness on a global level went down. 79 countries deteriorated while 84 improved, a nearly even split!

The Least Peaceful Countries

We should also mention some countries that ranked at the bottom of the list. These are the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, Syria, Yemen, and Afghanistan. These five places have shown high levels of unrest. The USA takes the 131st position.

Don’t let this ranking discourage you from visiting some places. To make an informed decision about your travel, you can check the US Department of State’s travel advisories. Also, ensure you know the difference between a travel alert and an advisory. Traveling is a personal choice, and you should make the most out of it as every country has its charms.
